The 41 contenders for Europe's 2011 Car of the Year trophy have been whittled down to the final seven as the European CoTY shortlist is announced today. The winner will be voted for by 59 of Europe's most influential motoring journalists, including two CAR writers: editor Phil McNamara and European editor Georg Kacher. The 2010 winner - by just 10 points ahead of the Toyota iQ - was the Volkswagen Polo. Like the Eurovision Song Contest, Car of the Year has proved controversial in the past with accusations of block-voting and blind patriotism, yet the award remains one of the most prestigious in the motor industry.
Range -topping Vauxhall Insignia VXR to launch at Barcelona in May
Latest to the market is this range-topping Insignia – the Vauxhall Insignia VXR (Opel Insignia OPC in Europe) – a 325bhp rocket version of the successful Insignia. With a new adaptive four wheel drive system and electronic limited slip diff, the Insignia VXR has bags of grip and great roadholding. It sits 10mm lower than the Insignia SRi, and the HiPerStrut front suspension keeps torque-steer in check.

Bentley today opened up its new Continental Supersports Convertible – the soft-top version of the E85-swilling Supersports coupé. It's the fastest rag-top ever to roll out of Crewe's gates, hitting 60mph in 3.9sec and 202mph flat out.The four-seater Conti Supersports Convertible follows closely the format of the 2009 coupé and arrives as Bentley has extended the Supersports' E85 diet across the entire 2011 model year Continental range. It's all part of Bentley's pledge to have every model biofuel-compatible by 2012, a key plank in its bid to make Bentleys acceptable in a carbon-crunched world.
